The Bitcoin Github or wiki does not seem to have the original source code of Bitcoin. Is there a source I can find?

Also what is best development base, ubuntu or windows?

Should I maybe install older version like ubuntu 10.04 or windows xp?

Most likely yes, few thread which talk about older client shows that they need to install older version of OS to get the old library.

I suggest Debian over Ubuntu 10.04/Windows XP since they provide ISO file with various library/software so you can save time from download/install old library.
